Building a website is like a marriage. You want to do it with someone you like. Liking someone means that you think they have the ability love, cherish and obey [your demands for your website].
Before you say YES to any proposal you should be thinking about the suitability of your potential mate.
Are the lines of communication open? Have you seen the work previously completed? Are questions being asked about your business and where you want to go with your online activities? Is the site scalable for future needs? If you took the site back would you be able to give it to another designer or would you be faced with a re-write?
Things to consider doing before you start dating;
- Make a rough site map that shows the structure of your website.
- Once you have a site map why not start writing copy for the individual pages. Fronting up with copy makes you look organised and impresses the designer no end!
- Photos? Would you be happy with stock pics that will look like you got them off another website? Will your designer offer photographic services?
- Now think about this seriously. Are you really able to maintain your finished website? We ask this as most clients will say they will commit - then fail. A website is also like a puppy except you cant take a website back to the pound after Christmas. You need to look after it.
